An Ohio judge has ordered a hospital to treat a COVID-19 patient with ivermectin, despite FDA warnings against it.
According to the lawsuit, Julie Smith said her husband Jeffrey, 51, is on “death’s doorstep” and ivermectin is his only option.
Butler County Judge J. Gregory Howard ordered West Chester Hospital to administer 30 mg of ivermectin to Jeffrey, who is in the intensive care unit, for three weeks.

Ivermectin is typically used for parasitic infections in animals such as horses and cows. It has been used with FDA approval in specified doses for humans suffering from intestinal parasites such as worms. However, it isn’t intended or used to treat viruses.
Amid a surge of prescriptions for the drug, as well as an increase in people purchasing the version of the drug meant for livestock, the FDA has warned of the dangers.
“The FDA has received multiple reports of patients who have required medical support and been hospitalized after self-medicating with ivermectin intended for horses,” the FDA said, adding, “Animal drugs are often highly concentrated because they are used for large animals like horses and cows, which can weigh a lot more than we do—a ton or more. Such high doses can be highly toxic in humans.”
